Foodlink President’s Letter

Project Background

Early in the calendar year, Foodlink’s annual giving program was tracking behind its revenue goals, prompting the team to explore opportunities to strengthen performance and close the gap. At the same time, the need in the community was intensifying. Food insecurity had risen to levels not seen since the Great Recession, and in the first three months of the year, visits to food pantries and meal programs increased by 35% compared to the prior year.

This combination of increased demand and slower-than-anticipated fundraising performance created a clear need for a focused, high-impact strategy to engage Foodlink’s most committed supporters.

The Solution

Building on prior insights, TFS identified an opportunity to more strategically engage Foodlink’s top donors. With a recently scored donor file in place, we recommended a targeted President’s Letter appeal designed specifically for the organization’s most loyal and high-potential supporters.

This highly personalized outreach featured a compelling, donor-centric message emphasizing urgency and impact, along with a handwritten element from Foodlink’s President and CEO to reinforce authenticity and connection. By narrowing the audience and elevating the message, the campaign was designed to inspire a meaningful, above-average gift from those most likely to respond.

Results

Despite a limited audience of approximately 800 donors, the campaign raised more than $120,000 in annual giving revenue.

By focusing on a small but highly engaged segment, Foodlink was able to unlock significant additional support at a critical time—helping the organization respond to rising community needs and stay on track toward its annual fundraising goals.

Conclusion

By focusing on Foodlink’s most loyal and high-potential donors, this campaign demonstrated the impact of precision over scale in annual giving strategy. Leveraging a recently scored donor file and a highly targeted President’s Letter approach allowed the organization to concentrate efforts where engagement and responsiveness were strongest.

The result was a meaningful increase in revenue from a small, curated audience at a time of heightened community need. More importantly, the campaign reinforced the value of data-informed segmentation and personalized outreach as core drivers of sustainable fundraising performance.
